Shana believes strongly that dieticians with a special interest in eating disorder therapy play a vital role in eating disorder treatment and recovery for people struggling with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED) or avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). These food behaviours are not only taxing on the individual but the entire family.

The role of a dietician is to assist in both the acute and chronic phase of recovery with medical nutritional support and biological stabilisation, food reintegration and structure, nutritional support and education. This education and support extends to both clients and family/ support structures to neutralise the often high charged food space. Shana supports the client through the many phase of eating disorder recovery including the process of normalizing the relationship with food while supporting nutritional needs, aiding the client to reduce dietary or food obsessions and supports behavioural changes around food and eating behaviours.

For our out-patient, privately-practice, clients this process is most effective when done in conjunction with a full multidisciplinary team, such as a psychiatrist, qualified psychologist, and occupational therapist. A psychologist can best aid with the processing of any challenging emotions that may arise during the journey, while allowing the food space to be held by the dietician.

The initial consultation is needed to establish a therapeutic structure and plan and all follow-up appointments are ideally scheduled weekly for 30-50 minutes per session.
